The updated taxonomy builds on the original framework, which was first introduced in November 2024, and addresses feedback related to overlapping processes, missing classifications, and ambiguous supply chain boundaries.
For the alliance, which comprises of Apparel Impact Institute (Aii), Cascale, Textile Exchange, and ZDHC Foundation, the enhanced structure aims to offer clearer process definitions and better support for reporting and sustainability efforts throughout the value chain.
Cascale environmental impact methodologies director Joël Mertens said: “The updated Supply Chain Taxonomy is foundational infrastructure for a more aligned and effective sustainability ecosystem. It reflects what’s possible when organisations commit to alignment, and we’re confident it will support more effective progress across the value chain.”
The Supply Chain Taxonomy is a collaboratively developed and maintained resource intended to evolve through annual updates in response to stakeholder input, changes in materials and technology, and shifts in regulatory requirements.
The framework aims to serve as a “shared language” for stakeholders, improve transparency through standard reporting practices, and support compliance and benchmarking.
It is also intended to minimise duplicated efforts and build collective capacity for sustainability initiatives.
While the taxonomy does not cover every process or product, the apparel alliance described it as providing a practical foundation for more uniform classification across the value chain, supporting future alignment among organisations in the sector.
Textile Exchange impact data and reporting director Luca Mosca said: “Aligning on a shared language for the supply chain is fundamental to driving credible, system-wide progress. This updated taxonomy helps bring greater clarity and consistency to how materials, processes, and impacts are understood and reported, enabling more effective collaboration and accelerating the industry’s transition to preferred production systems.”
