A man in California was convicted of attempted murder after he attacked his son with a sledgehammer after a disagreement.
Anthony Nardini, 42, of Bakersfield was convicted by a jury of the attempted murder charge, as well as aggravated mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Ventura County prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutors said that Nardini had reunited with his 24-year-old son after being estranged, and the two got in an argument at a residence in an unincorporated part of Ventura County near Simi Valley on March 19. The argument turned into a fight, and their family had to separate them.
Nardini left the residence in his truck, but he returned later while his son was sleeping on the couch. Prosecutors said that Nardini insisted his family members go to bed.
“Once he was alone with the victim, Nardini grabbed a sledgehammer he found on the property and began to bludgeon his sleeping son with it,” read a press release from the prosecutor’s office.
Family members heard the commotion and rushed in to find the son with a severe head wound. Nardini ran from the scene, but police were able to arrest him later. They found a bloody sledgehammer near the scene.
His son survived after being placed in a medically induced coma for several days.
Nardini faces a life sentence with the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on Nov. 1.
“While this conviction will never repair the emotional and physical scars inflicted by his father, we hope that this affirmation by the jury will bring some solace to the young man who experienced an unfathomable attack on his life,” read a statement from Ventura County Senior Deputy District Attorney Stu Gardner.
