The “Saturday Night Live” crowd was hit with a surprise when host Will Ferrell didn’t initially hit the stage at Studio 8H.
Instead, fans were greeted by his celebrity doppelgänger: Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
Smith — who is known to play up a gag with Ferrell that the two look alike — crashed the “SNL” great’s sixth hosting gig over the weekend when he made his way out from behind the set doors and took in applause at the start of the opening monologue.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you very, very much. I’m thrilled to be back here hosting ‘Saturday Night Live,’” began Smith as some woos and applause trickled in from the crowd.
“It really feels like coming home,” he later added moments before Ferrell, wearing an identical shirt and blazer as the musician, darted out of the set doors and to Smith’s side.
“Hey, hey, hey, hey! Excuse me!” began Ferrell.
“What?” Smith replied.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Ferrell said.
“I think I’m hosting the show,” Smith said.
“You’re not the host, I am,” Ferrell remarked.
While the crowd cheered for Smith, Ferrell scolded audience members, saying, “He pushed me down backstage, and I fell hard. Lorne [Michaels] had to give me mouth-to-mouth.”
After Smith’s claim to be the night’s “musical guest” failed to convince Ferrell, the host kicked the musician off the stage.
“Chad Smith, he took the wind out of my sails, this sucks,” the comedian later complained.
Ferrell went on to take questions from the audience, including one from the night’s actual musical guest, Paul McCartney, who jokingly confused Smith with the host on several occasions.
“Look, I understand your confusion, me and Chad do look a lot alike, but I’m Will. I’m hosting tonight,” Ferrell stressed.
“Nice try, Chad. Get back behind the drums where you belong,” McCartney quipped.
