Elon Musk has indicated he would be willing to finance a Mel Gibson adaptation of The Odyssey after responding to a viral proposal on X.
X user John Carter suggested Musk provide Gibson with a $100 million budget to produce a historically accurate adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
“I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek,” Carter wrote.

The exchange quickly gained traction on the platform, with Musk’s response receiving more than 80,000 likes and millions of views.
Gibson has directed several acclaimed historical films, including Braveheart, Apocalypto and Hacksaw Ridge.
The discussion comes as interest in Homer’s epic has grown following the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has renewed public attention on the ancient Greek poem.
While the film has been positively reviewed, it has sparked controversy with many of its casting decisions.
For example, Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o was cast as traditionally white characters Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in the film.

Meanwhile, transgender actor Elliot Page has a notable role as Sinon, a Greek soldier and the son of a servant of Antinou.
However, this character does not appear in the original poem and was actually borrowed from Virgil’s Aeneid and other myths.

It remains unclear whether Musk’s response was a serious commitment or simply an expression of support, and no project has been announced.
Gibson is currently working on The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.
