Ennis, Inc. (NYSE:EBF) reported higher sales and lower earnings for the quarter ended August 31, 2026, but legal items complicate the comparison. The underlying business held up better than the headline profit decline suggests, while paper costs created genuine margin pressure.
The September 21 release showed revenue of $102 million, up 3.3% from $98.7 million. Net earnings fell to $9.4 million from $13.2 million. Investors need to distinguish the litigation effects from changes in demand, acquisition contributions, and production costs.
Bull Case
The prior-year quarter included a $5.3 million favorable litigation judgment, while the current quarter included an unrelated $700,000 litigation charge. Management said diluted earnings per share increased $0.02 after excluding these items from both periods. This non-GAAP comparison removes the specified litigation effects from reported diluted earnings per share.
That modest improvement is more encouraging than the reported earnings decline. Gross profit also increased to $30.5 million from $30.1 million, showing that the larger revenue base produced additional gross profit despite a lower margin.
Ennis, Inc. (NYSE:EBF) generated $34.1 million of operating cash flow in the first half, compared with $18.4 million a year earlier. Cash reached $54 million as of August 31, and management reported no debt. That financial position provides room to support operations and acquisitions without immediate refinancing pressure.
Supply continuity is another positive. Ennis, Inc. (NYSE:EBF) has received shipments from alternative carbonless-paper suppliers following the closure of the sole domestic producer. Management continues to expect uninterrupted product availability and customer service. Maintaining supply protects the ability to fulfill orders while the business adapts to higher input costs.
Bear Case
Acquisitions contributed approximately $2.3 million of the $3.3 million quarterly revenue increase. Subtracting the disclosed acquisition contribution leaves roughly $1 million of additional sales, or about 1% of prior-year revenue, based on rounded figures. The reported growth rate therefore overstates the improvement outside those acquisition contributions.
Gross margin declined to 29.9% from 30.5%, a decrease of 60 basis points. Management attributed the decline primarily to higher carbonless-paper costs recognized in cost of sales. That pressure affects the economics of producing and selling printed products independently of the litigation comparison.
