First Lady Melania Trump is taking a different approach to her husband’s second term, focusing on big policy areas that are personal to her, Politico reported.

The first lady has made rare public appearances since returning to the White House with her husband. Occasionally she will address the press from the White House’s North Portico or travel to Capitol Hill to make announcements on her policy work. But overall, Trump has been a mysterious figure in her husband’s second term, and it is a posture that is it by design, Politico reported. Senior exclusive adviser to the first lady Marc Beckman told the outlet that Trump’s more sparing public presence aims to make her more effective on the policy front.

“First lady Melania Trump is locked in. She is looking to achieve more than any first lady before in history,” Beckham told Politico, noting that the first lady is going after her “Playbook.”

Behind the scenes, the first lady has been working on several issues, including reuniting Ukrainian children with their families, AI legislation like the Take It Down Act and foster care legislation.

This spring, Melania Trump traveled to Capitol Hill to lobby for legislation after President Donald Trump signed the “Fostering the Future” executive order, which is aimed at supporting children in welfare outcomes, according to Politico. In a closed-door meeting, the first lady told the lawmakers she expected legislation on her husband’s desk by the August recess, Republican Montana Rep. and Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith said. The legislation ultimately passed the house unanimously, Politico reported.

While the legislation hasn’t moved out of committee in the Senate, the first lady’s visit to Capitol Hill has had a bipartisan impact, according to the outlet.

“I think it made all of us feel good,” chair of the Democrat Illinois Rep. Danny Davis told the outlet of Trump’s visit to talk about the legislation. “It’s been great to work knowing that the first lady shares some of the same thoughts and ideas, and I think her support has been very helpful in moving the agenda forward.”

In October, Trump summoned the press to give an address to the nation. The secretive announcement ended up being about the first lady’s efforts to reunite Ukrainian children with their families. Beckham told Politico that the images of those who have displaced had a great impact on Trump.

The first lady continues to work on the effort with her office taking the lead rather than the State Department, according to Politico.

And sometimes, Trump has done things that have seemed to surprise her husband and his White House, like when she chose to address allegations about any close connection to the deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The first lady’s decision to deny any relationship with Epstein was meant to show she wanted to be a “leader for the victims,” Beckham told Politico.

On March 2, Trump addressed a UN Security Council meeting on children’s safety. Critics highlighted how her remarks came days after the U.S. launched a war with Iran on Feb. 28 and argued her words were undermined by the conflict, according to Politico. Beckham told the outlet that Trump is not at all swayed by the media’s criticism of her as she focuses on making her impact on the administration.

“She doesn’t decide to do anything based on what the media might say,” Beckman said. “There’s so much important work that she’s doing.”
