France’s Lois Boisson took it out on her tennis racket on Monday following her opening round loss at the U.S. Open as victor Emma Navarro celebrated nearby in a viral clip that’s being hailed for highlighting the duality of the sport.
Video shows Boisson — following a tough, rain delay-plagued match that included three sets and two tiebreakers — shake hands from across the net with her American opponent in an otherwise run-of-the-mill gesture.
After the two thank the chair umpire, Navarro looks toward the crowd as she raises her fists to celebrate the win.
As for Boisson? She is caught on camera smashing her racket — and, later, tossing it across the court — in the background.
Social media users on X delighted over the clip, with one fan writing that it’s a nominee for “meme of the year.”
Some turned the clip into a GIF file, prompting a user to declare that it “literally captures the only two feelings of playing this sport.”
Others like The Atlantic’s Lukas Weese wrote that the moment was “absolute cinema,” adding that the broadcast’s director and cameraperson both “deserve a massive raise.”
