When AI stocks rebounded last week, optical networking companies did not rebound equally.
Lumentum Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:LITE) jumped nearly 10% in Wednesday trading and led the S&P 500, while Coherent rose 6.9%. Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) managed only a 0.4% gain and remained down sharply for the week.
All three sit inside the same broad AI-connectivity buildout. The divergence suggests investors are beginning to distinguish between different pieces of that infrastructure rather than buying every optics name together.

Lumentum offers concentrated exposure to the bandwidth problem
AI clusters increasingly need optical connections as more accelerators communicate across larger physical distances. That drives demand for high-speed transceivers, lasers and other photonic components.
For Lumentum Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:LITE), concentrated exposure is both the attraction and the risk. Strong hyperscaler spending can create powerful operating leverage as faster generations of optical links ramp. The same concentration can produce violent corrections when investors question the pace of AI spending or customer deployments.
Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) has a broader business and participates through optical fiber and connectivity infrastructure. The company benefits as hyperscalers build new campuses and connect larger networks, but that exposure is less directly tied to the highest-value transceiver components.
Corning also introduced a fresh complication. A September filing established an equity distribution agreement allowing the company to sell up to $2 billion of stock through Goldman Sachs. That gives Corning capital flexibility for large projects, but potential issuance creates dilution at a moment when investors are already scrutinizing the cost of AI infrastructure expansion.
Professional investors also split on the two names
Insider Monkey’s database showed Lumentum ownership falling to 111 hedge funds in Q2 from 123 in Q1. Arrowstreet Capital nevertheless increased its position sharply during the quarter. Corning moved the other way, rising to 99 hedge-fund holders from 91, while Tairen Capital increased its GLW position by roughly 9%.
Lumentum’s August 31 short interest stood at about 7.12 million shares, nearly 8% of public float, with approximately 1.7 days to cover. That makes positioning meaningfully heavier than in many large-cap AI infrastructure names.
The takeaway from the rebound is not that Lumentum won and Corning lost. Their economics are different. Lumentum offers more concentrated exposure to high-speed optical components, while Corning offers broader exposure to the fiber-heavy physical buildout underneath them. When the AI trade becomes selective, that distinction suddenly matters.
