With just five weeks to go until the midterm elections, a key analyst is warning Republicans that their fate is likely already sealed, and it’s all because of President Donald Trump.
“There’s not a lot you can do,” Charlie Cook, founder of the Cook Political Report, told ABC’s Martha Raddatz on “This Week” on Sunday.
Voters are angry over rising prices, especially fuel, and the impact of Trump’s tariffs.
“All these things came together at the same time, right as voters start paying attention,” Cook said. “It was almost like the bottom fell out suddenly.”
He said what’s coming in November isn’t so much a “blue wave” as a “red undertow.”
“It isn’t pro-Democrat,” he said. “It’s anti-Trump, basically, and Republicans that have been supportive of the president.”
That will result in an election “riptide” that will wipe out Republican candidates.
“The House has been kind of a done deal for a good while,” he said. “But the Senate, a year ago, it wasn’t realistic to think that the Senate might flip. But now, it’s very realistic.”
Cook predicted that Democrats would flip 20 or more seats in the House and likely four in the Senate, giving them control over both, although he warned that some of those Senate races will be very close.
