The thrilling World Cup comeback victory for Argentina over Egypt became bigger than the sport of soccer following fans of the former waving an Israeli flag that seemingly angered Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, team staffers and the Egyptian fanbase, which transitioned the Round of 16 match into political warfare.
Squaring off Tuesday at Atlanta Stadium (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Argentina pulled off a crazy 3-2 win against Egypt, coming from behind in the last stages of the game after facing a 2-0 deficit to punch their tickets into the quarterfinals. In the 14th minute, the Egyptians took the lead thanks to defender Yasser Ibrahim, and then later in the 66th minute of the second half, midfielder Mostafa Zico scored to put Egypt’s advantage at 2-0. At the time, it looked like the Pharaohs were going to pull off a huge upset over Argentina — the same Argentina who won the last World Cup in 2022.
However, the Argentines came storming back near the end of the game, with defender Cristian Romero getting a goal in the 79th minute, and just four minutes later, superstar Lionel Messi would score the equalizer. The comeback was completed courtesy of midfielder Enzo Fernández with a winning goal in stoppage time to advance Argentina and eliminate Egypt.
Following the game, fans of Argentina were celebrating their team’s glory, with a couple of the supporters being seen on camera waving the Israeli flag. And specifically, it was being waved in the direction of Hassan.
