John Oliver clowned Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) on Sunday after he cast the deciding vote to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general, the latest example of Senate Republicans barking and rolling over for President Donald Trump.
The “Last Week Tonight” host, in a segment highlighting the “signs of a slow-moving constitutional crisis” in Trump’s Justice Department, pointed to Cassidy outlining “many, many good reasons” not to confirm the president’s former personal attorney before announcing that he’d “vote for him anyway.”
Cassidy appeared emotional, pausing for several seconds while on the Senate floor, before saying, “I’ll be criticized for this vote, what’s new?”
The GOP lawmaker then added, “But the people of Louisiana can be assured that I worked hard to understand the issue to make the right decision. And with that, I yield.”
Oliver swiftly reacted to a clip of the remarks, saying, “What the fuck was that?”
Oliver, who did a guest spot on “General Hospital” this year and is set to appear on “Days of Our Lives” on Tuesday, continued, “That is going to be one of the most over-the-top, dramatic performances I have ever seen, and I will remind you that’s coming from someone who’s now been in multiple soap operas.”
The comedian went after the senator over his “whining” that he’ll face criticism for his vote.
“I don’t know, man. Maybe try voting for something people would actually like,” said Oliver of Cassidy, who called Trump’s AG pick “not perfect” and was someone who showed “poor judgement” in regards to the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.”
Oliver added, “If every day before work you psych yourself up in the mirror saying, ‘Here we go, another day at the asshole factory making everyone hate me,’ it might be time to reconsider some of your choices.”
