A woman, 47, from St. Augustine, Florida has been hit with a severe felony charge following police saying that she attacked another pickleball player at Treaty Park, allegedly doing so with a paddle while an argument was happening.
Facing an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge, the woman claimed to investigators that she came to the defense of her son amid an argument with the alleged victim.
With that being said, per statements that were gathered from the victim and witnesses via News4JAX, police say in the arrest report that her son seemingly wasn’t in any danger throughout the episode. An orthopedic nurse, the woman also faces a misdemeanor charge of giving a false ID to law enforcement.
Per the arrest report via News4JAX, the woman and victim were playing against one another May 31 at approximately 10 a.m. when a disagreement broke out regarding whose responsibility it was to get the ball.
Following the game, the victim and the son of the woman were speaking about his style of play, and that’s when the woman allegedly “interjected herself” into the disagreement.
From there, police say that the woman used a pickleball paddle and hit the victim multiple times in the head, resulting in the man having numerous face cuts and heavy bloodshed.
According to the arrest report, per News4JAX, a false name was allegedly given by the woman on two occasions while speaking with police amid their investigation.
Police state in the report that the woman was using “a weapon that can cause serious bodily injury or death,” which triggered her felony charge.
